BOOK BUDDS NEWSLETTER
November, 2004
Welcome to the Book Budds Newsletter!
Little did I know when I started a book club for my daughters and their
friends a few years ago that I would be writing a newsletter for a Book Budds
web site! Since then, a small idea has grown into something that I am excited
to share with girls across the country!
There is a lot happening at Book Budds! Our school-year book club programs
are off to a great start, and we love our new meeting place at Home Sweet Home
in Grayslake! We still have some openings for girls interested in second or fifth grade reading-level programs.

here for more info!
In the first issue of the Book Budds Newsletter, you’ll read about upcoming
Book Budds events as well as new products and events we’re working on for the
future.
We will always offer some ideas for parents to use as
reading incentives at home, and a little vocabulary fun, too!
Have fun reading!

book club? We can help! Book Budds is all about encouraging girls to read
books, share ideas, make friends, and have fun! We make it easy for you to
start your very own Book Budds book club at home. First, check out our
Start Your Own Book Club

topics, series, etc., and are easily available? Check out Book Budds Monthly Book Picks
(see the Menu on the left). When you
Register as a Book Budds member, you

Mother/Daughter Special Book Events
Book Budds’ Mother/Daughter
Special Book Events provide a unique opportunity to open the lines of
communication between mothers and daughters (grandmothers and granddaughters,
aunts and nieces, older and younger friends, etc.) in a fun way.
Stories serve as the common
ground for discussions where girls and women are able to gain insight through
each others thoughts and experiences. Of course, Book Budds provides food,
crafts, and other fun activities to make these events even more special!
On December 3rd, we
will have our Mother/Daughter Pajama Party Event! We will discuss The
School Mouse, by Dick King-Smith. This event is recommended for
girls ages 7 and up. Feel free to wear your pajamas and slippers! We will
discuss this fun book, enjoy cookies and milk, and create a craft project
together.
This event will be held at Home
Sweet Home in downtown Grayslake.

Reading Incentives
Parents! Do you want to
encourage your kids to read? Consider using some of these incentives:
 |
Check out the Rewards program offered through
www.Bookadventure.com. We love it! Book Adventure offers a reward
program when children earn points by correctly answering questions about books
they have read. Parents can also custom-design their own reward programs!
|
 |
Find magazines about whatever topic really excites your child.
Buy her a subscription or plan regular trips to the library where she can read
them.
|
 |
Read the same book with your child, separately.
Plan a special date where you go out for a meal or a hot chocolate together
and discuss what you both thought about the book.
|
 |
Help your daughter and her friends start a Book Budds book club!

Vocabulary Challenge
Expanding your vocabulary is one
of the greatest benefits of reading! At Book Budds, we encourage girls to
check meanings in the dictionary whenever they are unsure. Having an
easy-to-use dictionary available makes this much easier! Some of our
favorite dictionaries for girls are:
The American Heritage First Dictionary (ages 4-8)
The American Heritage Children’s
Dictionary (ages 9-12)
The American Heritage Students
Dictionary (Young Adults)
